Millions of people, both male and female, suffer from
thinning hair and hair loss. The most common form is known as androgynous alopecia, or male pattern baldness.
This type of hair loss is often genetic, but can be headed off with treatment. Here are a few places to find
thinning hair treatment.
One of the first medications that was introduced for the purpose of stopping
hair loss and restoring thinning hair was minoxidil. Sold under the trade name, Rogaine, this medication was first
available only by prescription. Today, one can go to any drug store and buy it over the counter. Following the
directions for use helps a large percentage of those whose hair loss is caused by male pattern baldness.
Another place to go for treatments for thinning hair is the family doctor. There are
still medications available that require a prescription to obtain and have been proven to help stop hair loss
and/or stimulate new hair growth. Some are topical, meaning applied to the skin, while others are taken orally. It
is important to follow the instructions of the doctor for handling these medications as they pose a risk for
certain types of birth defects if taken or handled by women of childbearing age.
Almost everyone has heard of the Hair
Club for Men. This organization offers several different options in hair loss treatment. One of the most popular is
surgically transplanting live hair follicles from an area that has thick hair to one that is thinning or bald.
However, one does not necessarily have to join this club to get such treatments. Almost any cosmetic surgeon is
capable of performing these transplants and many specialize in doing just this type of work.
One place that many people would not think about as a treatment for thinning hair is
the office of psychologist or psychiatrist. Another major cause of hair loss is stress, and/or anxiety. Not
everyone is equipped to cope with such problems on a day to day basis and they lead to physical problems, including
hair loss. A psychiatrist can prescribe medications that help to alleviate the symptoms while working to get to the
source of the problem and eliminate it. A psychologist can assist by teaching the person coping mechanisms that
reduce the physical effects of stress and anxiety, thus slowing the loss of hair.
Not everyone who has thinning hair is treatable by normal means.
Those with other medical conditions, such as cancer, usually end up suffering from hair loss as a result of the
treatments used to try and cure the disease. When this is the case, the best place to go for treatment for hair
loss is to a store that sells wigs or one that sells bandanas that one can use to cover the head. There is also the
option of embracing the hair loss and allowing it to go completely. This is not a popular option on females, but
many men look good with no hair.
Depending on the approach one chooses to take as he/she tries to find thinning hair
treatment, the starting point can be different. If one wishes to try over the counter medications, a trip to the
drug store will usually yield results. If one feels that something stronger is needed, visiting the doctor is the
first step.
Those who believe that medication will not solve their problem should consider other
options. Cosmetic surgeons can usually perform hair transplants that will help solve the problem, at least
temporarily. It is important to find the cause of the problem before one can really hope to solve it. This could
even mean seeking the help of a mental health professional.
